Supramonte of Baunei
"a place that keeps the traditions of Baunei intact”
The Piras sheepfold or precisely "coile" , a term proper to the Baunese dialect, has always been intended for goat breeding and is located in a place of considerable landscape and naturalistic value, from where you can admire the Supramonte of Baunei which slopes gently towards the sea. The sheepfolds dedicated to goat breeding, "coiles de crabas" like this one, have particular attention to detail, because the shepherd not only spent months and months there, in solitude, or at certain times of the year, in the company of his family , but the milk was processed there, for the production of cheese. The shepherd's hut consists
The shepherd's hut consists of two essential parts, a cylindrical base built with a dry stone wall made of limestone slabs, and a cone-shaped roof made with juniper beams. Juniper, "su sinniperu" , is a robust, fragrant wood that is difficult to corrode by insects and for this reason is often preferred to holm oak. Even the enclosure of the goats is very accurate in detail and the still intact examples constitute real jewels of traditional and spontaneous architecture of the Supramonte. The latter is also made entirely of juniper wood and reaches considerable dimensions, with an almost circular shape.
The main structures of which it is composed are:
- "su barraccu", the shepherd's hut
- the auxiliary hut
- "sa corte", the enclosure for the goats
- "as cumbulas", pig shelters
At the Coile Piras you can still find these characteristics and the original naturalness of the places intact, so much so that you can watch the shepherd's cheese making and book typical lunches or dinners in his company.
